The Wageningsche Studenten Roeivereeniging 'Argo' was founded in 1913. Since then Argo has grown to be the largest student sports association in Wageningen, with more than 400 members. Argo provides activities which suit all levels of rowing, ranging from 'wedstrijdroeien' (race rowing) for serious athletes to 'competitieroeien' (competition rowing).
For the more recreational rower, our Competition Rowing Program provides plenty of opportunity for everybody who wants to learn about rowing in a relaxed manner. As a competition rower, two trainings per week in a boat and an indoor circuit training provide plenty of exercise. Matches at competition level mainly comprise 500m events, and give the rower the opportunity to compete against other competition rowing teams from the 21 other student rowing associations in the Netherlands. Every Thursday evening a professional coach is available for instruction especially for competition rowers. All competition rowers are invited for special rowing experiences, like rowing in an 8+.
Arie is a student from Indonesia and he will tell you how he likes Competition rowing:
My first impression of Argo was, when I saw their stand during the AID. Because I wanted to feel the new experience and how fun rowing is, I joined Argo. My motivation is just new experience and fun. But when you really join in the club actively you will know that you get something else: socialization with the Dutch students, who are good at sport. With this I wait you to meet me at Argo.
Our race rowers are trained by a professional coach, a full-time position at Argo. Under his supervision, our rowers build up a high level of technical rowing proficiency through boat trainings and intensive run and indoor circuit trainings. In March the official rowing season starts and takes our rowers to many locations in the country, including the national 2k-rowing course the 'Bosbaan', in Amsterdam. A selection of our race rowers occupy positions in the national boats, which participate in grand events such as the World Championships and the Olympic Games.
Other activities at Argo
Apart from the different rowing programs that Argo offers, it also boasts a host of other activities. Many hours are spent in front of the fireplace, on the terrace having a barbeque, or at the bar. Frequent party events also give Argo an attractive social element. All activities at Argo are organised by members who join the different committies and most of the coaching is done by experienced members. You can also join these committies or you can learn to coach other rowers.
Argo is run by a board of eight students. Together with the comitties, coaches and other members, they organise national rowingtournaments, tours, trainingcamps, and the introduction periods.
During the Annual Introduction Days of the University in August, and the rowing introduction periods in May and September, Argo invites the students in Wageningen to get to know the association and to experience the Argo-feeling. This all happens under a relaxed and commitmentfree environment. To subscribe for the Introduction in 2012 (4 - 30 September 2012) Go to the AID-website
